CHEMICAL PEELS

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Pre-Treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure prior to treatment. Sunburned skin cannot be treated.

  • Do not bleach, wax, tweeze or use depilatory creams in treatment area for 3 days prior to treatment

  • Discontinue use of retinoid (Retin A, Tazorac, Differin, etc) and Hydroquinone products 3 days prior to treatment

  • Discontinue use of 10% or higher Alpha Hydroxyl Acids, Glycolic Acids, and exfoliants 3 days prior to peel

  • If you have a history of perioral herpes (coldsores), advise office so you may begin prophylactic antiviral therapy the day before treatment

  • Schedule your injection at a time when minor swelling or peeling will not disrupt your social obligations


Day of Treatment:

  • Omit lotions, creams, make up or deodorant in area to be treated AND arrive with clean washed skin

  • Inform provider of any changes in medical history and of all medications you are taking

Post- Treatment:

  • Redness might be present (and last up to several hours) after peel

  • Use Tylenol only as needed for any soreness

  • Swelling might occur after treatment for 3-5 days

  • Not everyone peels! However, the treatment is still effective! If you peel, peeling will start 3-5 days after peel.

    • Do not pick or scratch at treated skin but instead keep moisturized

  • Eat well and stay hydrated for optimal healing

  • Avoid strenuous exercise or sweating for 24 hours

  • Treat skin gently washing with a gentle cleanser, cool water, using hands only and pat dry no earlier than 4 hours after peel

  • May use cool compress after 4 hours if excessive discomfort, burning, redness, or swelling

  • Follow post peel instruction sheet with products if included in peel

    • Avoid sun exposure if possible and use a minimum of SPF 30 daily and every 2 hours if outdoors

Every chemical peel and person is different in their results as well as their post-treatment recovery period.

TYPES OF SkinMedica® Peels:

SkinMedica® Vitalize Peel is one of the most popular chemical peels available because it is more gentle on the skin then traditional chemical peels. Comprised of Alpha-Hydroxy Acid, Bety-Hydroxy Acid, Resorcinol Acid, and Retinoic Acid, the Vitalize Peel provides a unique mix of ingredients that is a powerful yet non-damaging peel that can take years off aging skin. This is the perfect peel for patients with mild to moderate skin conditions including fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, pigment irregularities, and acne.

  • USAGE: You will see noticeable results after one peel; significant results after 3 to 6 peels. Treatments can be repeated every 3-4 weeks until desired results are reached.

    • Addresses various skin conditions, such as active acne or scarring, age spots/sun damage, fine lines, hyperpigmentation/uneven skintone, large pores, uneven skin texture, wrinkle

    • Effective (achieve visible improvement after one treatment, significant results after a series of treatments)

    • Can be customized for the treatment of each specific condition

    • May be performed on Skin types I- VI

    • Little or no down time

    • Peeling solution combined with Retinoic acid creates more exfoliation than other chemical peels same depth

    • Well tolerated (minimum or no burning, peeling solution has pH 2-3, higher than most chemical peels)

SkinMedica® Rejuvenize Peel is our strongest peel. Comprised of Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid, Resorcinol, Panthenol, and Isoceteth-20, followed by a Retinol Solution, the peel penetrates deep into the epidermis, produces the most exfoliation, and can substantially improve the appearance of the skin. This advanced formulation of peeling agents, with a built-in anti-irritant and penetration enhancer provides controlled exfoliation of the uppermost damaged layers of the skin to reveal fresher and healthier skin.

  • USAGE: This peel provides predictable results with minimal down time. It is great for patients with moderate to severe sun damage, pigment irregularities, and acne. You will see noticeable results after one peel, significant results after 3 to 6 peels. Treatments can be repeated every 4-6 weeks until desired results are reached.

    • Effective for use on skin with active acne or scarring, age spots/sun damage, fine lines, hyperpigmentation/uneven skintone, large pores, uneven skin texture, wrinkles

    • Noticeable improvement with just one peel

      1. May be performed on Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-VI

      2. Can be used on skin types V-VI after the patient has established tolerability to Vitalize Peel, or with VI provider consent

      3. Well tolerated with minimal "down time"

      4. Reduces skin irritation associated with the stronger chemical peels without diminishing peeling effect

SkinMedica® Illuminize Peel is a non-invasive, very superficial chemical peel from SkinMedica that increases skin glow and radiance. It utilizes a novel approach to chemical peeling with a newer generation of alpha-hydroxy acids (mandelic acid and malic acid) in combination with phytic acid and commonly used peeling agents (salicylic acid and resorcinol) to maximize skin rejuvenating effects with low irritation.

  • USAGE: This peel has no downtime and is a perfect treatment the day before your wedding, prom, or any big event. After this peel your skin will have improved color, clarity, and texture. Results can be seen is as little as one treatment but treatments can be repeated every 2 weeks until desired results are reached.

    • Effective for use on skin with age spots/sun damage, fine lines, hyperpigmentation/uneven skintone, large pores, uneven skin texture

    • Increase skin glow and radiance

    • Tightens the skin and restores a more youthful appearance

    • Improves clarity, color and skin texture

    • Patients achieve enhancement of skin appearance with minimal downtime and discomfort

    • Appropriate for first-time chemical peel patients or patients looking for a gentle, very superficial peel

    • May be performed on Skin types I- VI; Excellent for combination skin

    • Little or no visible peeling

PATIENTS WHO SHOULD NOT BE TREATED:

  • Patients with active cold sores or warts, skin with open wounds, sunburn, excessively sensitive skin, dermatitis or inflammatory rosacea in the area to be treated. Inform the aesthetician/VI provider if you have any history of herpes simplex.

  • Patients with a history of allergies (especially allergies to salicylates like aspirin), rashes, or other skin reactions, or those who may be sensitive to any of the components in this treatment.

  • Patients who have taken Accutane® (isotretinoin) within the past year.

  • Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding (lactating).

  • Patients who have recently received chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

  • Patients with vitiligo.

  • Patients with a history of an autoimmune disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, etc.) or any condition that may weaken their immune system.

Note: Patients who have had medical cosmetic facial treatments or procedures (e.g. laser therapy, surgical procedures, cosmetic filler, microdermabrasion, etc) should wait until skin sensitivity completely resolves before receiving a SkinMedica® Peel. Patients who have had cosmetic injections should wait until full effect of their treatment is seen before receiving a SkinMedica® Peel.

ADVERSE EXPERIENCES THAT MAY OCCUR AFTER YOUR SKINMEDICA® PEEL:

It is common and expected that your skin will be red, dry, possibly itchy and/or irritated. It is also possible that other adverse experiences (side effects) may occur. Although rare, the following adverse experiences have been reported by patients after having a SkinMedica® Peel: skin breakout or acne, rash, swelling, redness and burning. Call the office immediately if you have any unexpected problems after the procedure.

UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING PRIOR TO TREATMENT:

  • I do not have any of the conditions described in the “Patients Who Should Not Be Treated” section.

  • I understand that the actual degree of improvement cannot be predicted or guaranteed.

  • I understand that the amount of visible peeling cannot be predicted or guaranteed.

  • I understand that I may need several of these peels to achieve optimal results.

  • I understand that for optimum results the post-peel instructions must be followed.

  • For Vitalize Peel® or Rejuvenize Peel™ only: I understand that I may have from 2 to 5 days of downtime.
